If you arrived here at S02E07: Recap Part 2.0 and haven’t just read Part 1.0, you better read it first here.
There’s a quote that is often misappropriated to English author Aldous Huxley. He who’s book The Doors of Perception gave Jim Morrison’s The Doors their name. The quote goes something like this:
“The perfect dictatorship would have the appearance of democracy, a prison without walls in which the prisoners would not dream of escape. A system of slavery where, through consumption and entertainment, slaves would love their servitude.”
And while no-one knows the origin of the quote, it doesn’t make it any less true.
That’s where we’re living folks, in a prison that we don’t know is there. You, me, everyone we know.
What Esmail is saying, not only in S02E07 but throughout both seasons about the nature of reality is very important and worth listening to. Most of us are brainwashed by both the media and the lies we tell ourselves, about ourselves. People think that the truth comes from newspapers and the media while novels, movies and comedians deliver fiction.
Those people couldn’t be more wrong. In reality, the opposite is the case. The news is lies. Fiction, myths and comedy are where you find the truth if you know where to look…
On every level you care to think about it, reality being an illusion has been talked about for thousands of years – a stalwart of storytelling and religion from the Indian Vedas and Upanishads right up to The Matrix. The fact that your thoughts create your reality has been a basis of psychotherapy for 150 years and quantum physicists are becoming more and more convinced that we live in a 2D universe projected as a 3D hologram.
People have been trying to tell us this forever from Bill Hicks CNN rant way back to Greek Philosopher Plato’s Allegory of the Cave both contain the same message 25 years and 2,500 years ago. So when are we going to get the message?
Nowadays, the media has spun her 100-year-old web of lies so brilliantly that we believe impossible things; working 70 hour weeks is acceptable and the way to get ahead. Success means buying a house. Women must look like this. Men must act like this. Expensive things are nice. Guns don’t kill people. Black Lives Don’t Matter. Consume. Fear. Obey. Pay taxes. Don’t think. Stay stoopid. Die.
They’ve created a world where everybody is so stressed by commuting to a job they hate for low salaries to shackle themselves to the dream of paying a bank 25-year mortgages (when the whole concept of money and economics is also a lie) that no-one is interested in what storytellers are ackchewally trying to warn us about!
Those in power have made us forgot that stories are cautionary tales – blueprints on how to live this wonderful life.
Just like drinking the water from the River Lethe in Dante’s Inferno 700 years ago made people forget they were dead, all we wanna do is switch off and forget, null our pain with America’s Got Talent, cheese-stuffed crusts, alcohol, prescribed meds and escape our lives.
And that’s how they’ll win.
But only if we let them.
In creating Mr Robot, Sam Esmail is trying to bring our made-up, fake, over-worked, dualistic, anti-intellectual, dumbed-down, enforced, racist, ultra-violent, warmongering and hate-fuelled reality to our attention.
And just like Elliot is trying to collapse Evil Corp. Sam Esmail is The Messiah.
Follow him, become a disciple.
Rise up and fight against the tyrants. The Evil Corps, the CNN’s, The Donald Trumps.
We can defeat them if we stand together.
