It’s the 21st day of our Advent Calendar and it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas out there, so we have a special treat – a kinda masterclass in directing and editing which touches on some of Mr Robot’s influences and celebrates Sam Esmail’s genius.
S02E04 was a doozy – it contained The Careful Massacre of the Bourgeoisie, the origin of the F_Society mask and a beautiful dream sequence in which Elliot made amends with Bill Harper and watched the ivory E Corp tower fall.
It was an episode that truly took us on a journey deeper down the rabbit hole, but today we’re gonna concentrate on one scene in particular…
We all knew how it was going to end, but nevertheless, we still love Elliot and Mr Robot’s chess scene and hopefully, this short video – created by us here at Mr Robot Hacks – will give you a window into how scenes in Mr Robot slowly build and release tension, because like we say… you can’t always be banging the gong!
We just love the way Esmail invokes master of Japanese cinema Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai and Yojimbo…
Which in turn influenced the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone and the way he pays homage to a sixty-year-old, black and white Swedish movie which you may recognize from Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey!
Normally, a screenwriter would shorten sentences as a tension-building scene like this nears it’s crescendo, but Sam Esmail has too much to say, so watch how Christian Slater and Rami Malek must use only the rhythm and cadence of their voices to add tension to their lines.
We really hope you like the video!
If you loved it, please let us know and we’ll make some more…
If you hated it, please also let us know and we’ll make some more!
And please share the shit out of it on FB and Twitter!
